Minors Born Outside Canada
Children born abroad to a Canadian parent may be Canadian citizens by descent, but must apply for a Proof of Citizenship certificate to confirm their status.
How It Works
First generation rule – Only children of first-generation Canadians born abroad are automatically citizens. If both parents were also born abroad, the child may not automatically qualify.
Apply for proof – Parents or guardians must apply on behalf of the child, providing birth records and proof of Canadian parent’s status.
Use certificate for travel & rights – Once issued, the child can obtain a passport, access healthcare, and exercise citizenship rights.
