Applying for Canadian citizenship is the final step for many permanent residents. It grants you the right to vote, hold a Canadian passport, and enjoy full participation in Canadian society.

How It Works

  1. Eligibility – You must:

    • Be a permanent resident,

    • Have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the past 5 years,

    • File income taxes (if required),

    • Prove English or French language ability (ages 18–54),

    • Pass the citizenship test (ages 18–54).

  2. Attend your test & interview – If required, you’ll complete a knowledge test and possibly an interview.

  3. Take the Oath of Citizenship – Once approved, you attend a ceremony to officially become a Canadian citizen.
