Minors Born Outside Canada

Children born abroad to a Canadian parent may be Canadian citizens by descent, but must apply for a Proof of Citizenship certificate to confirm their status.

How It Works

  1. First generation rule – Only children of first-generation Canadians born abroad are automatically citizens. If both parents were also born abroad, the child may not automatically qualify.

  2. Apply for proof – Parents or guardians must apply on behalf of the child, providing birth records and proof of Canadian parent’s status.

  3. Use certificate for travel & rights – Once issued, the child can obtain a passport, access healthcare, and exercise citizenship rights.

Why It Matters

  • Protects your child’s right to live, study, and work in Canada.

  • Avoids confusion at passport or travel stages.

  • Ensures your child’s Canadian status is recognized worldwide.

At Nivara Immigration, we help families confirm children’s citizenship status and apply for certificates smoothly.
