Work Permit Extensions

If your work permit is nearing expiry or needs updated conditions, it’s essential to apply for an extension or change before it expires to legally stay and continue working.

How It Works

  1. Apply early—ideally at least 30 days before expiry. If your application is submitted before expiration, your status is maintained (“implied status”) until a decision is made.

  2. Submit online via IMM 5710 form, with the necessary documents and fees. IRCC will issue a Proof of Authorized Stay letter (WP‑EXT) you can show your employer.

  3. Be aware of new rules on “maintained status”: As of late May 2025, IRCC has tightened rules around maintaining status when multiple work permit extension applications are submitted, to prevent misuse.

Why It's Important

  • Legally stay and work in Canada while IRCC processes your extension.

  • Avoid gaps in employment and valid status.

  • Get proof (letter) to show employers, even while waiting.

At Nivara Immigration, we ensure applications are properly timed, complete, and submitted correctly—helping you avoid status issues and stay legally compliant.
